Chaldon Church, Surrey

My friend Rev Tim Goode recently took over as Vicar of Whyteleafe and Chaldon, after serving Croydon Minster for three years as curate. People had been telling me for years of the little church in Chaldon with its medieval wall painting, and I just had to go check it out! I spent a few days in nearby Caterham with friends at the end of my stint in the UK, so visiting the church simply required a pleasant (if a bit muddy!) walk through Happy Valley.

The church dates from the 11th century, the painting from the 12th, circa 1170. Its full title is “The Ladder of the Salvation of the Human Soul and the Road to Heaven.” Read more about this fascinating piece of sacred art history here and here.
