The comments are all positive (edited, perhaps?), although one guy hints at an alternative opinion: “It could have gone really cheesy and white trashish but yours was not the case.”

In fact, the couple, dress, and video were later featured on The Learning Channel’s “Incredible Weddings.” I like how they use “unfortunate wedding mishaps” to segue into this story. Because of the contrast. And stuff.

I’m fascinated by this quote from a commenter on a wedding photography blog: “No Photographer could have captured this…. not even the bewildered guy wielding his camera on a bracket.”

I beg to differ. Somewhat. Maybe the bewildered guy would miss the shots, but a skilled wedding photographer would capture details that would appeal to both the people who LOVE this video and those who CRINGE at the cheesiness of it (and he/she would also correct the yellow-green color cast).

Why is that? Because the cheesiness of the video doesn’t translate itself into the still photography. This is an important filter which ensures that still photography will never be replaced by videography, despite the advances in capabilities of DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D MKII and 50D, etc. Still photography will always have its place, precisely because of its filtering capabilities. Not that I’m discounting the video capabilities of the 5D MKII and ignoring possible uses for it in upcoming weddings….

So where does that leave me? I love this video. I love the reaction of the people. And the wedding party. Because for me, that helps create great wedding photography. I might not like the video as a finished product as much as I would like well-done still frames OR professionally-edited videography (this is another topic), but that isn’t really the point of the video.

In my masters degree coursework in vocal performance., I took a course called Acting for Opera. The professor, Buck Ross, encouraged us to decipher the “CaveMan Version” of every aria we sang, or line of recitative, whatever. “Home Good,” or “Heart Broken,” or mostly (for opera divas of the soprano variety) “Me Dying.” I find myself doing this exercise on all sorts of levels, all the time. What’s the CaveMan Version of this wedding procession video?
